Fort Hood, TX
Fort Hood is a U.S. Army post in Killeen, Texas, founded in 1942 and operating to this day as the most populous U.S. military installation in the world. The post is named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, commander of the Texas Brigade during the American Civil War.
Located halfway between Austin and Waco, Fort Hood’s main business area is in Bell County, with the training countryside area in Coryell County. Fort Hood consists of three sections: the main cantonment, West Fort Hood and North Fort Hood. The main cantonment, referred to as Main post, includes Hood Army Airfield. Altogether, Fort Hood houses more than 45,000 assigned soldiers and close to 9,000 civilian employees over 214,000 acres, making it one of the world’s largest military bases by land area.
